Welcome to a new generation…
Picture this, all the moments you lit up with excitement when you met another Africans wrapped up into a website. African Women Today hopes to give you the same feeling in the form of stories. It’s almost an unspoken truth that the experience of growing up in America is different for Africans. Expectations are more, parents are stricter and there’s this lingering pressure to accomplish all the things your parents nag you about.
We are our parents wildest dreams since we are one of the first generations to grow up abroad and experience the luxuries they weren’t afforded. Being first generation or even third generation hasn’t always been the easiest; from strict curfews when hanging out with friends to not being able to date until you’re married (yes, we are not lying). These experiences are usually felt by other first-generation African people, not your regular American friends. These experiences are unique but aren’t really documented. When we looked around, we realized these experiences weren’t being discussed or shared when we looked at online media, we realized that the black African experience was completely underrepresented or non-existent.
We couldn’t find many media outlets that told stories that we could relate to because they didn’t realize being an African black girl is a whole totally different experience than being a black American girl. African Women Today is a new lifestyle website for young African women who grew up abroad or live abroad. Its goal is to showcase those struggles and triumphs that come with being a first generation African girl.
Come join a global network of African women redefining what it means to be an African woman today!
